For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

During Christmas we hear the word "peace" quite often. Peace and goodwill and peace on earth are two catch-phrases that you may hear during the season. But, what is peace? Most of us think of it as a time when there is no war or fighting. Sometimes at the nursing home, Ms. Dorothy will pray that there will be peace all over the world. But, girls, until the Lord Jesus returns, there will be no worldwide peace. How then is Jesus called the Prince of Peace? Because someday He will usher in peace---eternity in peace. But, right now, the prince of the power of the air (satan) freely roams the earth seeking to destroy the lives of men, women, and children. By faith we understand that peace is coming to those who have trusted Christ as Savior.

I also believe that we can live in peace NOW. I know I just spent a whole paragraph talking about future peace---peace that will come when the Lord returns---an outward peace. However, the type of peace I am speaking about in this paragraph is an inward peace.  This type peace is defined as a freedom from troubling emotions, thoughts, or oppressions, and Jesus offers it NOW.  While all around us, the world struggles on life's raging seas, if you know Christ as Savior, you can rest in the calm tranquility that only the Prince of Peace can bring.

Not only does the Lord Jesus give peace, but He also asks us to bring peace to those around us.   Are you a calming force in the lives of others or are you more likely known as a "thunder-maker"?   In other words, do you make people feel easy, rested, and calm or stirred-up, enflamed, and provoked?   Take a look at James 3:18,
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
During Christmas, we are grateful for the Prince of Peace, and we humbly ask you, Lord Jesus, to help us sow peace in our lives and the lives of others.

  1. What a blessing to be able to have peace through Jesus! I hope I am the type of person that is spreading peace around others!
