Tuesday, September 3rd

On a consistent basis, you may expect our devotions to cover aspects concerning feminine modesty.  We studied purity in heart in our Beautiful Girlhood meetings over the summer, and some of the devotional material may be sort-of a recap for material you've already heard.  Nevertheless, I need to be reminded often, so these devotions may be more for my benefit than all of yours.

By definition, the word modest means a reserve or propriety in speech, dress, or behavior.  But, to be honest, when most of us think of the word modest, automatically our minds drift to the dress part of the definition.  If one of you were to overhear me say to Bentley, "Honey, that is not modest at all."  Instinctively you would assume that I was talking about her clothing.  That's how we've programmed our minds, right?  But, the definition includes speech and behavior.  So, in fairness, Biblical modesty is more about what you are that what you wear.

I want to leave you with one passage from I Peter 3:2-6,

While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.  For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

Notice the whole passage isn't dealing with clothing choices in particular, but deals more with issue of the heart.  And, what is the ornament that women can put on that is of great price to the Lord?  Re-read the passage to find out.

  1. It is true that we have programmed ourself to look at modesty as what you wear. However our whole life should be an example of modesty. Today I read Luke 1/ Proverbs 3
